RADIOLOGY GOES INTERVENTIONAL
The Department of Radiological Sciences is capable of doing interventional procedures with the use of ultrasound machine and/or computed tomographic scanner.
Fine needle biopsy of the lung is guided by CT scan, which can produce higher yield. CT scan has the advantage of visualizing the anatomic location of the mass more than the ultrasound. One disadvantage is use of radiation. Other organs, which are better guided by CT scan are those in the thoracolumbar spine, pancreas or small focal lesion.
Aspiration of pleural effusion or empyema is guided ultrasonographically. Other procedures that can completed with ultrasound are paracentesis, aspiration of liver or psoas abscess, core biopsy of the liver or abdominal biopsies, such as the kidneys. The use of ultrasound is also a prerequisite in percutaneous nephrostomy, especially if the idneys are just mildly dilated.
There are already many interventional procedures being done in our hospital. With competent radiologists and pathologists, the census for ultrasound or CT scan guided procedures are increasing.
